Mammals meddling with the ethereal

I've been trying to understand the world...fail! I've trying to understand my self...fail! I've been trying, for ages, to understand things, but as far as I can understand anything at all, the only conclusion I can reach is that some things just aren't meant to be understood, just to be lived...

And, if trying to understand one's self can be hard enough, imagine trying to understand someone else...it's simply the recipe for a great big mess, where the outcomes can be quite disastrous. After all, human beings are complex, or better said, complicated creations of nature.

Basically, we are simply mammals...trying to meddle with the ethereal. We are animals, made of flesh and blood, but mostly made of instincts, hormones, chemistry...and, just because of the fact that we have the distinct capacity of realizing our own nature, which we usually refer to as the capacity of "thinking", we, therefore, "think" we are special, that we are not animals, that we don't abide by the laws of nature, the laws of "animal behavior".

We like to think of ourselves as some special item in the Universe, different from everything else. Though, we are just animals! Of course, we have some different characteristics from the other animals. We have the capacity to create, to think of the abstract, and we have something we call "feelings", though I'm not that sure of the nature of this "feature".

Most people simply choose to believe that just because we "think", we should be totally discarded from the category of "animal" classification. But, I believe it to be entirely misleading! We are animals! Animals that think, yet still animals. We have hormones that influence our behavior, we have instincts that influence our behavior, we have "bodily chemicals" that influence our behavior...

Many tend to think that our capability to think, alone, determine who we are, what we do, and so on. And, that seems to be a huge mistake. Sometimes we have "urges" that can only be explained by our animal nature. Sometimes we do things that, rationally, we know we shouldn't be doing them, yet we do them anyway. And, that can be said, just the same, to what it relates to this thing we call "feelings"!

We are complex creatures (much because we choose to be so)! We try to forget our animal nature, try to believe that "thinking" and "feeling" are special characteristics that rule our lives. WRONG! We have to add the animal nature to that equation! We have to understand that thinking, feeling, and animal nature work combined in order to determine who we are. And, of course, there are other more complex things to be taken into account, like more social elements such as education, social environment, etc., and elements which are more "ethereal", more abstract, such as religion, spirituality, etc.

Too complex things to be understood by the human mind, thoughts that have permeated human history of thought and philosophy. But, I'm not trying to give, or even find, any answers to such long-debated issues. All I'm trying to say here is that we have to accept the fact that we have an animal factor to take into account when we think of human nature. We cannot deny our animal "side", for it greatly influences, still, our own definition of "self". No matter how evolved we may consider ourselves to be, we still have those hormones, those animal instincts that drive part of our actions, to greater or lesser extent, depending on each particular case. I'm not saying, either, that we are purely animals...I'm saying we can't forget of the animal factor. It still counts on much of what we do on our daily lives.

Anyway, I'm not even sure this is what I initially was thiking of...I was just taken in this path throughout the writing of this post. Guess that, initially, I was just wondering about how hard it is for us to understand anything in life...but, that can be the subject for another future post.
